Your Role in Educating Consumers on Flood

Prioritize educating your clients on their flood risks and insurance coverage options, as the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) continues to raise the alarm on consumers’ “lack of understanding” of the issue.

Late last week, the MIA released Bulletin 19-03, which replaces last year’s Bulletin 18-11. The new bulletin clarifies consumers' lack of understanding of “whether flood insurance is available to a homeowner in an area not designated as a Special Flood Hazard Area by FEMA.”

The bulletin serves to:

  • Recommend that producers "advise their clients to consider the costs and benefits of flood insurance coverage"
  • Remind producers who sell flood insurance that they must complete two CE credits in a designated flood course to renew their license*
