Mixed State Election Results Include Wins for Independent Agents

The dust is settling on elections across the state, and AgentPAC – your state-based, bi-partisan political action committee – had a 94% success rate in state legislative races (note that some election results are still unofficial). Plus, it appears that AgentPAC-backed independent agent Chris Quinn (R-Delaware) will return to the House after fending off a strong challenger.

WHAT WE KNOW
Overall, it appears that although Democrats gained seats in the state House and state Senate, both chambers will remain in Republican hands (albeit with smaller, arguably more conservative Republican caucuses) heading into the next legislative session. With Democrat Gov. Tom Wolf winning a second term, it remains to be seen whether the dynamic at the state level will change dramatically or whether gridlock will continue. Gov. Wolf’s re-election also means that there will not be a new insurance commissioner in 2019. At IA&B, we have continued to strengthen our dialog with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) during this year and look forward to continuing that relationship.

TO BE DETERMINED
What remains to be seen is who is going to be elected to the leadership positions in the state House and Senate, as well as which new faces we will find on the insurance committees next year.

OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD
More than 30 freshman legislators will be heading to Harrisburg in January, and your IA&B government affairs team has a great opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and educate new members of the General Assembly on the issues important to the agent and broker community.

In order to do that, we need your participation. Help AgentPAC end the year strong and kick-off 2019 on solid footing by making a personal contribution today.
