Insurance Department Shares Priorities with IA&B Committee
Legislators don’t return to Harrisburg until September, but your IA&B Government Relations Committee convened this week in Mechanicsburg with a full agenda, including bills to watch in the current legislative session, AgentPAC (your state-based political action committee), and a discussion with staff of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.
While much of the committee discussion focused on efforts to increase minimum auto liability limits, other topics included:
- The newly effective privacy regulation which alleviates the need for agencies to send annual privacy notices when certain conditions are met
- Recently introduced legislation to prohibit certain indemnification agreements in construction contracts
- New legislation to establish a Landslide Insurance and Assistance Program within the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency
The committee was joined for part of the meeting by both the chief of staff and legislative director of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, who gave a detailed overview of their state-based health exchange initiative. They also discussed current legislative priorities (namely legislation to address the problem of surprise balance billing), talked about NextGen Insurance Academy (which IA&B and member agents are supporting), and took questions from committee members.
