How Pennsylvania’s insurance regulation stacks up
The Pennsylvania Insurance Department received an improved mark in the R Street Institute’s annual Insurance Regulation Report Card. After receiving a “B-” letter grade in 2016, Pennsylvania received a “B+” for 2017.
In particular, the report identified Pennsylvania’s strength as “low politicization” and weakness as “large runoff obligations.”
ABOUT THE REPORT
The report is an annual examination of each state’s insurance regulation. R Street – a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy think tank – aims to answer three questions with its report:
- How free are consumers to choose the insurance products they want?
- How free are insurers to provide the insurance products consumers want?
- How effectively are states discharging their duties to monitor insurer solvency and foster competitive, private insurance markets?
