DOI flexes muscles at auto insurers
The Delaware Department of Insurance (DOI) is cracking down on auto insurers’ unfair claim settlement practices. According to Auto Bulletin No. 1 (reissued), the DOI continually receives complaints about the following:
- Unfair settlement offers for totaled vehicles
- Basing a settlement offer on a valuation calculated using national rather than local market data
- Prematurely closing claims
The bulletin reiterates the insurance commissioner’s ability to “call a hearing” about any unfair or deceptive act or practice.
